Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a special day to honor the women we love. Our own mothers, stepmothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, and other motherly figures in our lives. Don't forget to show these women how much you love and appreciate them on a regular basis, not just on Mother's Day.

While most of us were busy having lunch with our mom's, or perhaps calling our mom's on Mother's Day, it was not so great for some mothers.  I wanted to post this article in honor of the mother's who's husbands or sons are in another country fighting for our freedom.

He Makes all Things New

This woman of the Bible was caught in adultery, and the religious leaders of that time demanded full punishment. Interestingly it says nothing about the man who was also caught, however the woman was considered a whore and therefore must receive punishment. Just as each one picked up their rocks to stone her, Jesus protected her and confronted the religious leaders and said "he who has no sin, should cast the first stone." Then one by one, they began to walk away, starting with the oldest then the youngest. You can see her reach out to Jesus for mercy, and he gives it to her freely. This is the heart of the Father.

"Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
"No one, sir,” she said.  “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

Jesus is the Deliverer. He came to forgive, restore and heal us. All we have to do is reach out and ask for His mercy.

Women Taking Care of Dying Exes

It looks like even years after a bitter divorce, women are taking care of their dying exes these days.

"The study, which focused on 10 divorced women who had become caregivers for their ex-husbands, found that the women were spurred by a host of motivations, including altruism, guilt, and, perhaps most important, the need to protect their children..."

“It wasn’t that their children were incapable,” said study co-author Christine Proulx, an assistant professor of human development and family studies at the University of Missouri. “But their children were at the peaks of their careers and involved with their own families. In many cases the women were trying to ward off a sandwich-generation situation for their kids.”

$1.5 Million in Grants Awarded to African Women

"United Nations, New York — UN Women, under the Fund for Women’s Property and Inheritance Rights in the Context of HIV/AIDS, today announced approximately US$1.5 million in small grants to twenty grassroots and community-based organizations in sub-Saharan Africa to strengthen women’s property and inheritance rights as a critical strategy for addressing women’s vulnerability to HIV/AIDS.

“There is evidence that increasing women’s economic security through access to assets such as land, property, income, credit and skills training helps to prevent HIV and strengthens the ability of women to mitigate its impact in their households and communities — especially when women are the main providers of care in AIDS-affected households,” said UN Women Executive Director Michelle Bachelet.

With grants of up to US$75,000, the grantees — selected from nearly 650 submissions — will implement one-year projects. Initiatives will focus on strengthening legal frameworks to better promote women’s property and inheritance rights in the context of HIV/AIDS; building the capacity of legal professionals and informal justice system providers to make legal services available, accessible and affordable to women living with and/or affected by HIV/AIDS; as well as increasing the influence of organizations and networks to ensure national HIV/AIDS laws and policies protect and promote women’s rights.

Launched in September 2010, the Fund for Women’s Property and Inheritance Rights in the Context of HIV/AIDS is generously supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). Given the overwhelming response to the initial call, CIDA doubled its initial contribution bringing the total amount of its support to US$2 million and enabling UN Women to award twice as many grants."

Ashley Judd Speaks Out About Being Abused

Ashley Judd is a huge humanitarian. She wrote a new book "All That is Bitter and Sweet". In this book she talks about her childhood sexual abuse and how she deals with it today. She contributes her ability to deal with what has happened to what God has done in her life. I admire her bravery. Especially being someone in the public. Her willingness to share her story will encourage many others who have suffered.

11 Year Old Gang Raped in Texas

This is a very sad story. A young girl's innocence has been stolen. Some say that she was voluntarily involved, other say it was forced. Whether it was forced or not, is not the issue here. An eleven year old is just a child and most of these are grown men.

How can we better protect young girls from things like this? What can we do to make a difference? Young girls need to be taught to speak up for themselves and speak out if they are being harassed so that it doesn't wind up leading to something more serious. We need to address this sort of thing in schools and help teach self-confidence and self-defense.

This whole thing makes me wonder how often this sort of thing goes on and we never hear about it. Luckily, this particular incident was recorded on a cell phone and is being used as evidence against the 29 men involved. I hope the law cracks down hard on these men.

The Story

"(CBS/KHOU/AP) CLEVELAND, Texas - Police say the gang rape of an 11-year-old girl was captured on cell phone video, according to a search warrant affidavit obtained by several Houston media outlets. Eighteen juveniles and adults are accused of sexually assaulting the girl at an abandoned mobile home in Cleveland, Texas.
Police say the lurid video circulated at a small Texas middle school.
The girl, who police have not named, told investigators she was raped at the home on Nov. 28.
Indictments in the case say there also were attacks on Sept. 15 and Oct. 25. Each time, at least two individuals were allegedly involved. The indictments say the girl was attacked by at least three people in November.
Both police and prosecutors have declined to discuss details of the case.
So far, well over a dozen suspects have been arrested in the case, some of whom are juveniles and students.
Investigators believe there could be even more suspects.
"I've heard as many as 28 or more. The case now has 16, 17 people who have been arrested," defense attorney James Evans III told CBS affiliate KHOU."

Valerie Plame Wilson, Fair Game

If you have not seen the movie Fair Game, you need to see it! It is a true story about a former female US CIA Operations Officer who was outed in 2003. Once her cover was blown, she lost everything, including several of the Top Secret missions she was covering internationally at the time. After her identity was compromised, everything was immediately over, and people lost lives.

The movie shows how Valerie Plame Wilson has to choose between career and family. She is a real person with a real story. Her story seems like it would be the perfect Angelina Jolie film about a female CIA agent betrayed by the government while doing covert operations, only this story is true. Valerie also has a book out called "Fair Game" which I have yet to read.

Valerie is an inspiration to working women, wives, mothers, and even our country. She is a woman of courage and bravery who risked it all to help our nation and people in other countries. I am so glad they made this movie. It is good to know these kind of people really exist.

Learn Something From Mennonite Women

Perhaps we can all learn something from the Mennonite people. They may be a bit different, but hey are humble, quiet people who are always willing to lend a helping hand someone in need. I have a lot of respect for their willingness to assist in times of disaster, when it doesn't even involve themselves. They believe in helping their fellow neighbor, even if they are across the country.

"We don't have to know somebody to do good for somebody." Quote from a Mennonite woman from video below.

Wal-Mart Accused of Worker Sexism

Wal-Mart is currently under investigation for the largest discrimination lawsuit ever. Case is headed to the Supreme Court.

Portion of Article from MSNBC:

"Betty Dukes, the main plaintiff in the case, has worked for Wal-Mart since 1994 and believes that she was paid less than men with less seniority and that she was passed over for managerial positions. Dukes is one of eight named women in the suit who hope to stand for hundreds of thousands of others who might have been similarly affected.
The claims of bias are pretty egregious. The suit contends the retailer’s corporate culture is “rife with gender stereotypes demeaning to female employees.”
Wal-Mart executives allegedly referred to women employees as “Janie Qs” and business meetings were held at Hooters restaurants, according to a Supreme Court filing. The lawsuit contends that “while women comprise over 80 percent of hourly supervisors, they hold only one-third of store management jobs, and their ranks steadily diminish at each successive step in the management hierarchy.”

Young VA Female Killed in Tsunami

The family of Taylor Anderson, a Virginia woman who was teaching English in Japan, said officials confirmed her body was found amid the rubble in the city of Ishinomaki. She was 24.

"In what may be the first confirmed American casualty from the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan, a Virginia couple said the body of their 24-year-old daughter has been found amid the rubble.

The family of Taylor Anderson, who was teaching English in Japan, released a statement saying they had been notified by officials from the U.S. Embassy in Japan that their daughter was found in the city of Ishinomaki in northeast Japan, the Associated Press reported. Officials at the embassy were not immediately able to confirm Anderson's death Tuesday.

"We would like to thank all those whose prayers and support have carried us through this crisis," said Andy and Jean Anderson, of Chesterfield County, Va., in a statement released Monday. "Please continue to pray for all who remain missing and for the people of Japan."

Young American Hero

Virginia's governor released a statement expressing support for Anderson's family.

"Fittingly, she was last seen helping parents safely reunite with their children following the earthquake, an act which illustrates her dedication to her students and to the Japanese people she served," Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell said in the statement. "Today we join the Anderson family in mourning the loss of a wonderful young Virginian who personified the selflessness and sense of duty that Americans serving abroad have become known for."

The Associated Press reported that Taylor Anderson began studying Japanese in middle school, and had moved to Japan in 2008 as part of the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme.

The total number of the dead and missing from the disaster topped 22,000 on Tuesday, according to Japan's National Police Agency."

Largest Pedophile Bust Ever Makes MSNBC Headlines

Massive Online Pedophile Ring Busted by Cops 3/16/11

Five Americans among 184 people arrested; 230 abused children taken to safety

"An Internet pedophile ring with up to 70,000 members — thought to be the world's largest —has been uncovered by police, a security official said Wednesday.
The European police agency Europol said in a statement that "Operation Rescue" had identified 670 suspects and that 230 abused children in 30 countries had been taken to safety. More children are expected to be found, Europol said.
It said that so far 184 people had been arrested and investigations in some countries were continuing. Most of those detained are suspected of direct involvement in sexually abusing children.
They include teachers, police officers and scout leaders, AP reported. One Spaniard who worked at summer youth camps is suspected of abusing some 100 children over five years....
Cori Bassett, a public affairs officer for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said in an email that there had been five arrests and four convictions in connection with Operation Rescue in the U.S.
"Arrests so far have been made in Georgia and Connecticut. ICE continues to pursue the leads provided by Europol," she added.
The website was shut down following the three-year investigation, Europol said.
"The website operated from a server based in the Netherlands and, at its height, boasted up to 70,000 members worldwide," it added...
...Law enforcement authorities from 13 countries, including the United States, Australia, Canada, Italy, Spain and the U.K., were involved in the case, Europol said... In Britain, police said, the children involved were aged between 7 and 14...."

Black and White Bulimia

Study: Black Girls 50% More Likely to be Bulimic than Whites

December 7, 2009 By Pia

"By Tamika Thompson from Tavis Smiley-PBS
In 2005, The New York Times published an article called “Blacks Join the Eating-Disorder Mainstream.” The article explained that “more blacks and other minorities have been seeking help from eating disorder clinics” and that “[n]o reliable numbers exist for how many minority women suffer from eating problems, but experts suspect that cases are increasing.”
Yesterday, I shared my conversation with Stephanie Covington Armstrong, author of Not All Black Girls Know How to Eat, whose story of struggle to overcome childhood trauma, as well as an eating disorder that she developed in adulthood, serves as a cautionary tale to those who think that bulimia doesn’t impact members of the African American community.
Today, I wanted to share my conversation with Michelle Goeree, a USC economics professor, who, along with researchers from the University of Maryland and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, published “Caught in the Bulimic Trap?
Their study found that African American girls are 50% more likely to be bulimic than white girls and that girls from low-income families are more likely to be bulimic than girls from middle- and high-income families.
Goeree says those results surprised her.
“Prior to this research, we also held the popular conception that eating disorders (and bulimia) were more common among girls from white, mid-to-high income families,” Goeree says.
“We were less surprised after we realized that insurance may not cover the expensive doctor visit where a girl with an eating disorder gets diagnosed,” she adds.
“If two girls both suffer from bulimia nervosa, but one is from a low-income family and the other from a high-income family, which girl is most likely to be diagnosed if it requires a visit to the expensive psychiatrist?” Goeree asks.
“Girls who are African American and/or come from low-income families are much less likely to be diagnosed with an eating disorder conditional on having an eating disorder,” Goeree says.
In other words, we all have the idea that bulimia impacts middle-class white girls because they are more likely to receive the diagnosis when, according to the study, African American girls are more likely to exhibit and persist in bulimic behavior…"

Planned Parenthood Busted

Undercover Sex Videos 2/3/11

Planned Parenthood had to fire workers who were enabling underage sex trafficking.

..."The undercover videos bear similarities to those that united lawmakers in opposition to low-income advocacy group ACORN. The New Jersey Planned Parenthood video showed a couple walking into the
Perth Amboy clinic for help with their "sex work."

The man in the video can be heard explaining to the Planned Parenthood employee that his "girls" -- some of whom he describes as being 14 or 15 years old and illegal immigrants -- need to get tested for sexually transmitted diseases. He also inquires about abortion services.

After initially telling the couple that Planned Parenthood is "obligated" to report certain information about minors, the employee says she "doesn't want to get anyone in trouble." She pulls out a piece of paper and refers them to what is apparently another clinic for abortion services.

"You never got this from me," she says. "If they're 14 and under, just send them right there if they need an abortion. ... Their protocols aren't as strict as ours."

The employee said her clinic wants "as little information as possible" and later tells the couple to come talk to her if there are any problems. She urges any underage girls to lie about their age.

"Worse ever comes to worst, you guys come see me," she says. "I'll jump in ... with nobody looking. ... That's why you come and ask for me only."...
